Background

Realtime Content Insights is a website that lives within the Google News Initiative as an added tool for publishers to use in newsrooms. RCI was created to provide newsrooms with real time updates in order to make content creation and distribution decisions.

A challenge was that I did not have access to a research team, nor was I given much information about the users.

A solution for me was to take initiative and research what users thought about RCI 1.0 through reading past articles. This was able to give me a basic understanding of what users thought about the tool and how it was beneficial for them in their newsrooms.

It was a challenge to know which data visualizations to use for which data metric. As a solution, I took the initiative to research about different data visualization charts and what they communicate.

I also collaborated with my project manager to get another perspective on the chart designs to determine if it was communicating the right message.

It’s important to have a growth mindset. I didn’t let the fact I didn’t specialize in data visualization stop me from creating different charts for the data metrics. I was able to be proactive in researching and finding the right solutions.

IMPACT

Meeting with the clients bi-weekly led to developing a good relationship with the clients. This ultimately led to the clients being very happy with the outcome of

the project.

Therefore, I was able to make a business impact for the studio I was working for because after this project, we continued to receive new projects from the client.
